It’s our first week back to normal service so here’s a roundup of the past few weeks of BESS action in Europe, with projects moving forward in Romania, Denmark, the UK, France, Spain, Albania, Germany and Austria.
The projects combined total well over 1.5GWh grid-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) capacity and show the maturation of the European market as a whole, with the inclusion of notable smaller markets that typically feature less prominently in the energy storage news headlines. In summary:
- Nova Power & Gas has commissioned a 200MW/400MWh BESS in Romania
- European Energy has put what it claimed is Northern Europe’s largest solar and BESS plant at 200MWh into operation in Denmark
- Trina Storage is deploying a 24MW/48MWh BESS at an existing solar plant in Estonia
- Envision, Eiffage and Entech wil together deliver a 50MW/100MWh BESS project in France
- BRUC has refinanced its Spanish solar portfolio, paving the way for the co-location of up to 650MW of BESS
- ADS-TEC has secured BESS orders totalling 20MW/40MWh in Germany and Austria
- Gresham House has acquired two UK projects totalling 297MW/594MWh
- Fortis Energy is seeking engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) bidders for a 25MW solar, 75MWh BESS in Albania
The activity comes ahead of the Energy Storage Summit EU 2026 in London, UK, on 24-25 February 2026.

Nova Power & Gas commissions 200MW/400MWh BESS in Romania
Nova Power & Gas has put a 200MW/400MWh BESS in Floresti, Romania, into commercial operation.
Energy minister Bogdan Ivan attended the inauguration (pictured above) on 12 December, and said: “Battery storage and new generation capacities are precisely the types of projects Romania needs to modernise its energy system and safely integrate an increasing share of renewable energy sources.”
Nova, part of the conglomerate E-Infra Group, has also started building a 160MW gas plant and said the two investments total €350 million (US$410 million). The firm said it already has 240MWh of BESS in operation in Romania, and has plans for more than 600MW/1,200MWh of further projects.
Banca Transilvania provided financing for the BESS.
European Energy puts ‘Northern Europe’s largest combined solar and battery park’ into operation in Denmark
Independent power producer (IPP) European Energy has started commercial operations on a 200MWh BESS it added to its existing Kvosted solar plant in Viborg, Denmark, which it said makes it the largest solar and BESS plant in Northern Europe.
The 100MW solar plant has been operational since 2022 and the BESS was added later in order to help shift the solar load generation to more hours of the day, the firm said on 29 December. It was built by the company’s in-house European Energy EPC arm, and will be formally inaugurated at a ceremony on 2 February 2026.
The firm is targeting 1GW of BESS capacity by the end of 2027.
Trinasolar to deploy BESS for Estonia project
Chinese solar giant Trinasolar has signed a BESS supply contract with energy firm Sunly for the solar and storage Raba Solar Park project, which is also a case of BESS being added to an existing solar plant.
The firm will provide 21MW/42MWh of BESS capacity (48.88MWh nameplate capacity) via its storage arm Trina Storage, using its Elementa 2 platform. It will be an AC-coupled solution with 21 Elementa 2 cabinets and six 4.4MVA power conversion system (PCS) units along with power plant controller (PPC). Deliveries were scheduled for late 2025.
The Raba Solar Park has been operational since 2024 and uses Trinasolar’s Vertex PV modules and FixOrigin mounting systems.
Envision and Eiffage/Entech JV wins 50MW French BESS tender
Construction firm Eiffage and system integrator Entech will build a 50MW/100MWh BESS and associated high-voltage substation for an unnamed solar plant operator, they said yesterday (5 January).
Lithium-ion OEM Envision Energy will supply the BESS while Eiffage Énergie Systèmes and Entech will handle facility design, engineering and construction, maintenance and operation under long-term contracts.
Eiffage and Entech set up the joint venture (JV) in May 2024 targeting transmission-connected projects, as reported by Energy-Storage.news.
BRUC raises US$554 million to refinance debt, add storage to 858MW Spanish solar PV portfolio
Spanish renewable energy developer BRUC has raised €474 million (US$554 million) to facilitate the addition of battery energy storage systems (BESS) to an existing solar PV portfolio of 858MW in Spain.
The non-recourse financing will be used to refinance the debt of the portfolio, which consists of projects in the regions of Andalusia, Aragon and Extremadura, and allows for the future financing of 650MW of new BESS at the facilities. The company noted that power generated at these projects, should they be co-located with batteries, would be sold under “hybrid” power purchase agreements (PPAs), “subject to previously agreed technical, commercial and financial parameters”.
“This approach positions storage as a scalable and bankable extension of BRUC’s operating platform, in full alignment with its business plan and the changing dynamics of the Iberian energy market,” said the company on Saturday.
The financing comes from a number of organisations—Banco Cooperativo, Banco Sabadell, BNP AM, Export Development Canada and Santander—some of which have worked with the company in the past. Last year, the developer raised an additional US$756 million in corporate debt from investors, including Santander, to develop a 6.6GW renewable energy pipeline in Spain.

ADS-TEC secures orders in Germany and Austria
System integrator ADS-TEC has secured orders for BESS projects for utilities in Germany and Austria totalling a combined 20MW/40MWh of capacity. The firm didn’t reveal the utilities, locations or when they were expected to come online, only saying they are ‘in the detailed planning phase’.
ADS-TEC was in the headlines recently for a much larger 1GW/2GWh project in Germany, which it appears to be developing itself for operations in 2029, while its core business is battery-backed EV charging infrastructure.
Gresham House Energy Storage Fund buys two more UK battery storage projects
UK BESS fund Gresham House Energy Storage Fund (GRID) has signed sale and purchase agreements (SPAs) to acquire two projects in Scotland and England.
The firm has signed deals for the 240MW Cockenzie project in East Lothian, Scotland, and the 57MW Monet’s Garden project in North Yorkshire, England, together totalling 297MW of capacity.
Furthermore, the acquisition of Monet’s Garden has already been completed and ownership has transferred to Gresham House Energy Storage Fund, which is listed on the Specialist Fund Segment (SFS) of the London Stock Exchange under the ticker ‘GRID’. The acquisition of the 100MW Elland 2 project, for which an SPA was announced in November 2025, has also been completed.

Fortis Energy invites EPC bids for 75MW solar-plus-storage project in Albania
Turkish renewable energy company Fortis Energy is seeking EPC providers for the Ersekë Solar Power Plant in Albania, which combines 75MW of solar PV capacity with a 25MWh BESS.
The project is located in the Kolonjë region of south-east Albania, and the company is now “inviting qualified suppliers and contractors” to make bids to provide EPC services at the project.
Fortis has not yet provided a timeline of when it expects construction to begin, nor when it expects the project to enter commercial operation, but said that “our team is already on the ground”.
The Ersekë project is at the most advanced stage of development among the company’s nine projects in Albania, with the remaining nine projects at what Fortis describes as the “early stage” of development.
