Chinese lithium-ion OEM Gotion High-Tech has launched manufacturing of its 5MWh BESS units at its manufacturing facility in Göttingen, Germany.
The launch follows the successful full compliance certification under EU Battery Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 from certifications body TÜV SÜD, the company said on its WeChat account last week (17 July).

The firm’s battery energy storage system (BESS) utilises its in-house manufactured battery cells with a cycle life of 12,000 cycles, and provides a 35% reduction in footprint via a ‘cluster installation design’, Gotion claimed.
The firm said the manufacturing facility in Germany was launched to better serve European customers and improve supply chain responsiveness. It has a research & development (R&D) partnership with a nearby university.
It started work on the facility in July 2021 and started manufacturing in September 2023, although that was primarily modules and packs for the automotive sector. Now it manufactures its grid-scale BESS there.
The firm also launched a 7MWh BESS this year, though it’s not clear if or when it will manufacture this outside China.
Gotion High-Tech has been one of the more active Chinese lithium-ion and BESS OEMs to have established manufacturing in the West.
It started manufacturing battery packs at a factory in California last year and is also building larger ones in Michigan and Illinois. However, the projects have faced opposition and the future of Chinese companies’ manufacturing in the US is unclear following the passing of the Republican’s One Big Beautiful Bill (OBBB) which has measures that could restrict market access for Chinese companies.
Europe meanwhile currently has 12-15GWh of grid-scale BESS assembly capacity, according to the CEO of Bulgaria-based microgrid and BESS firm International Power Supply (IPS), in conversation with ESN Premium. Gotion joins notable companies manufacturing in Europe already including Fluence, Nidec, Tesvolt and Saft.
