We hear about the progress made and challenges ahead at the policy level from Jacopo Tosoni of the trade association Energy Storage Europe.
The Energy Storage Europe deputy secretary general and head of policy offers perspectives on everything from the 100GW of cumulative installations—comprising around half-and-half lithium-ion battery energy storage systems (BESS) and pumped hydro—that was reached in late 2025, to the first leak of European Union (EU) plans to encourage higher levels of domestic content in deployment and manufacturing.
Our conversation spanned a breadth of other topics, including the drivers for industrial decarbonisation and long-duration energy storage (LDES) and why 1 July 2026 is an important date to mark the progress made (or not) by EU Member States in implementing their energy storage targets and system flexibility assessments under Electricity Market Design reforms.
Jacopo Tosoni met with Energy-Storage.news editor Andy Colthorpe for a video interview at this year’s Energy Storage Summit 2026 in February, hosted by our publisher Solar Media (part of the Informa Group).
