Tendering will open this week for a 20MW battery energy storage system (BESS) pilot project in Pakistan that could help shape the creation of an ancillary services market.

A new 50MW battery storage site in the UK will be another example of how batteries are benefiting the grid and offering returns for investors, the company behind the project has said. 

Stem Inc and Sunverge, best known for providing battery and solar-plus-storage solutions for businesses and homes respectively, are partnering with companies in the electric vehicle (EV) sector.

Wärtsilä will deploy a 5.2MW / 5.2MWh energy storage system (ESS) to help support Taiwan’s grid, joining the frequency regulation market launched this year by state-owned utility Taiwan Power Company (Taipower). 

Updated 27 July 2021: An RWE spokesperson told Energy-Storage.news that the combined capacity of the BESS installations will be 128MWh across the two sites. It was also confirmed that the project will be commercially-oriented, rather than a demonstration of the technology or potential business models.
