Developers in the US plan to install 15GW of new utility-scale battery storage, adding to about 16GW of storage installed so far, according to government statistics.

The US’ installed base of large-scale battery storage systems is expected to double in megawatt terms during 2023.

Battery storage capacity in the US more than tripled to 4,631GW in 2021 and increasingly broadened out of ancillary services, according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA).

From 10GW of battery storage expected to be deployed in the US over the next two years, more than 60% will be installed with solar PV.

The cost of battery energy storage in the US fell by 72% between 2015 and 2019 and utilities in the country are set to bring 10,000MW of new grid-connected capacity online in the next two years. 

The US’ installed battery storage capacity reached 1,650MW by the end of 2020, but the country is on track to have nearly 10 times that amount by 2024, according to the national Energy Information Administration (EIA).
