The Solar Media market research and editorial teams join forces for the inaugural Megatrends Report, utilising our analysis and expertise to identify trends that will define the energy transition to 2030 and beyond. This article is a sample of the full report, due for release in March 2026.
From 2022-2023, solar PV technology changed rapidly. The industry shifted from almost entirely PERC production to a near 50-50 split between PERC and TOPCon. By 2024, TOPCon had been adopted as the central technology in the global industry, and it continues to dominate today.
This technology shift was both accompanied and driven by massive expansions in Chinese solar manufacturing capacity as the leading industry players funnelled money into n-type TOPCon cell and module production. In the coming years, PV Tech Research expects things to gradually shift again, with a trend towards Back Contact (BC) technology, though the dynamics of that shift will be different.
