Huawei Digital Power, in collaboration with Germany’s VDE Renewables (“VDE”), has announced the completion of a pre-compliance data assessment for the digital battery passport of its LUNA2000 series grid-forming energy storage system (ESS), receiving the world’s first such validation from the German organization. The subsequent ceremony highlighted the company’s leadership in digitalization and compliance management across the battery lifecycle, establishing a key industry benchmark for high-quality advancement in energy storage.

The EU’s Battery Regulation passport requirements will come into effect on February 18, 2027, after which date battery products entering the EU market must possess a digital record spanning their entire lifecycle, covering critical indicators such as raw material sources, manufacturing processes, performance safety, carbon footprint and recycling information. VDE’s report for the digital battery passport of the LUNA2000 series grid-forming ESS fully validates the product series’ excellence in data integrity, traceability, transparency and systematic management, meeting the core requirements for data quality and management capabilities necessary for future battery passport implementation.

Senior Battery Consultant at VDE Renewables Patrick Zank explained that creating digital records for the full battery lifecycle supports the EU’s digital foundation for transitioning from a linear to a green circular economy. As a leader in the PV and energy storage sectors, Huawei Digital Power has developed a digital battery passport platform that ensures data compliance, transparency and traceability, providing a high-quality reference case for subsequent passport compliance practices and leading the digital transformation of the energy storage industry.

Wu Leilei, Marketing Director for Huawei Digital Power’s Smart PV and ESS business, added that the formal implementation of battery passport requirements will reshape the rules and value assessment frameworks of the global battery and energy storage industry, with the company committed to technology development and innovation.
