Some quick snapshots from the presentations and panels at Energy Storage Summit Asia 2025, taking place this week in Manila, the Philippines.
The third edition of the annual Summit, hosted by our publisher Solar Media (part of the Informa Group), relocated to a new country and city this year, following two successive stagings in Singapore in 2023 and 2024.
As before, the agenda focused mainly on the Southeast Asia region, and particularly the Philippines, for the first day, including keynote speakers Francis Saturnino-Juan, chair of the Philippines Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) and Bernice Garcia-Rama, VP of Meralco, the country’s largest electricity distribution operator.
You can read about their remarks in yesterday’s news story. We hope to bring you more in-depth coverage in the coming days from the sessions and interviews held on-site.

The Iberian blackout was used as an example of what can go wrong without system flexibility by Saturnino-Juan, who went on to highlight the Philippines’ energy storage journey so far, including its status as the earliest adopter of pumped hydro energy storage (PHES) in Southeast Asia.

The panel ‘GEA-4 and the road ahead’ saw panellists, including Philippines solar PV pioneer Tetchi Capellan (centre), discuss the country’s first-ever renewables-plus-storage auction. Consensus was that it represents a good start, but panellists would like to see future iterations designed to recognise specific applications and market roles.

Gabrielle Catano, business development manager for system integrator NHOA noted that BESS energy densities have doubled between 2023 and 2025, in a presentation around the company’s DC block-led approach.

With Southeast Asia in the early stages of BESS adoption, the discussion ‘Proven deployment strategies from Singapore, Australia and Japan’ heard from panellists including developers Nick Morley (APAC technical lead, Eku Energy, third from right) and Dr Mahdi Behrengrad (ESS and VPP lead, Pacifico Energy) with experience in those markets.

Cross-border imports and the potential of an ASEAN grid were among the issues discussed in the session ‘Scaling energy storage across Asia,’ moderated by Robert de Groot, technical director for energy storage at engineering, development and management consultancy Mott MacDonald.

Dr. Guang Yang, president of technology at system integrator Hyperstrong explained that from past experience, unlocking merchant revenues is likely to be key for the region’s adoption of storage, as he presented the company’s latest 6.25MWh, 20-foot containerised BESS.

Our colleague, analyst Charlotte Gisbourne from Solar Media Market Research, presented the latest developments in Asia’s BESS manufacturing landscape.
