US utility Southern California Edison (SCE) is looking to acquire distributed energy projects to help strengthen the grid in the Goleta area of Santa Barbara, California.

SCE issued the Request for Offers (RFO) for various technologies including fuel cells, solar PV combined with energy storage, combined heat and power, standalone energy storage and other distributed generation renewables. The utility is also looking for specific applications of these technologies such as demand response and permanent load shift.

Proposed technologies must be able to connect to a circuit, load or lower-level substation served by the Goleta 220/66kV substation, with a project completion deadline of 1 June 2020.

Eligible projects will participate in a competitive bidding process with a bidder's conference to be held on 22 March this year.

Colin Cushnie, SCE vice president of energy procurement and management, said: “Unlike other solicitations looking to increase capacity of the overall electric system, this solicitation is specifically designed to help increase resiliency for the Santa Barbara-Goleta area. We are seeking to provide our customers with increased reliability in the event of transmission outages that could affect this region, and do so with local resources.”
