South Africa’s primary electricity supplier Eskom has announced details of forthcoming major battery storage deployments.

South African grid operator Eskom is close to finalising the launch of 832MWh of battery energy storage development, but eyes are on an even larger upcoming REIPPP-model procurement.

A US$57.67 million loan towards the development cost of large-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) projects will be made to South Africa’s public electricity utility Eskom by the African Development Bank. 

After a recent tender process, up to 1,300MWh of grid-connected energy storage will be deployed in combination with renewable energy in South Africa through a number of large-scale projects.
