In this Energy-Storage.news webinar, EIT InnoEnergy and its ecosystem partners shed new light on the case for ultra-capacitors, the latest breakthroughs and the main segment areas. Safe, reliable energy storage devices, capable of high-power charging and discharging with long cycle life: ultracapacitors can bring many benefits to the world’s transition to clean energy.

How to keep your energy storage system flexible in times of changing market conditions

This webinar with Saft explored topics including:

  • Tactics that ESS operators can deploy to remain flexible: specifying an ESS solution that can adapt to changing operational profiles; scalability to increase energy and power over time; and securing guarantees that are flexible enough to cover your ESS as its operation pattern evolves
  • Saft’s experience of utility-scale ESS installations to show how operators can implement these solutions
  • Key factors providing certainty in the operational capabilities and limits of an ESS and power conversion equipment working in unison. Flexible performance requires a good understanding and control of interdependent performance factors such as available State of Charge (SOC) range, power over lifetime, energy throughput and energy efficiency

When energy storage meets electric vehicles: Smart solutions for critical infrastructure challenges

In this webinar, Wärtsilä Energy and Pivot Power discussed how energy storage is accelerating the UK’s energy transition by providing crucial capacity for rapid electric vehicle charging and enabling integration, optimisation and future-proofing the operational performance of multiple energy system assets under a single portfolio. Wärtsilä’s partnership with Pivot Power to deliver 100 MW of battery storage capacity across two sites in the United Kingdom is one example of how Wärtsilä Energy Storage and Optimisation's sophisticated energy storage solutions and GEMS energy management technology enables customers to tap into the full potential of renewable energy resources.

Israel’s electricity revolution: Gain expert insights into the latest national solar+storage tender

Israel is undergoing an electricity revolution, including a solar-plus-storage auction backed with government power purchase agreements (PPAs). In this webinar with consultancy Clean Horizon, Eitan Parnass, Director General & Founder of Green Energy Association of Israel (GEA-IL), introduced the general context for renewables in Israel, Michael Salomon, CEO of Clean Horizon presented the results of the first tender held in mid-2020, as well as detailing rules and providing indications on how to build a competitive bid for the most recent tender. Yossi Sokoler, Head of regulation department of Electricity Authority speaks about the future of energy storage procurements in Israel.

EVENTS

As you may be aware, Energy-Storage.news is part of Solar Media, which publishes the world-leading solar technology website, PV Tech, along with Current±, Solar Power Portal and the journals Photovoltaics International and PV Tech Power.

Solar Media also hosts events including the annual Energy Storage Summit, now onto its sixth year in 2021. This year’s unfortunate curtailment of physical events did have the silver lining that some of the content from the virtual events that were held instead can be viewed on the channel from the links below:

Making a business case for long duration energy storage

Long duration energy storage is “essential” to help accelerate renewable deployment, according to the US Department of Energy’s Dr Imre Gyuk, who moderates this panel discussion with Matt Harper from flow battery provider Invinity Energy Systems and Russ Weed from gravity energy storage company ARES. Dr Gyuk is director of Energy Storage Research in the Office of Electricity at the DoE.

The future is arbitrage, a deep dive into the merchant model

Grid-scale battery storage optimisation business models come under the spotlight in this presentation from Ben Irons of Habitat Energy. Followed by a short Q&A with Energy-Storage.news editor Andy Colthorpe. Points covered include:

  • What is the arbitrage business model? Trading in wholesale markets and the Balancing Mechanism, challenges and the role of algorithmic trading
  • How to make the investment case work – optimal duration, degradation, warranty.

Predicting the energy storage tech of the future

A panel moderated by Clean Horizon head of market analysis Corentin Baschet featured Dr Billy Wu, energy technologies and systems expert and senior lecturer at Imperial College, a London University, alongside Matt Allen, CEO and co-founder of UK-based project developer Pivot Power and Jim Stover, who is chief marketing officer at VRB Energy, a vanadium flow battery manufacturer based in North America with a subsidiary company in China.

Global market forecast, comparing storage around the world

Alex Eller from Guidehouse Insights (formerly known as Navigant Research) takes you on a half-hour journey around the world's major markets for energy storage as well as discussing some of the most promising upcoming regions, the value propositions and the market drivers that will continue to shape the ever-evolving landscape. Includes audience Q&A session.

UK energy storage in 2020: Revisiting Regen's 2017 Next Wave report

Find out what’s been going on in the UK energy storage market over the past three years, presented by not-for-profit clean energy expert group Regen at the Virtual Energy Storage Summit which took place online in late September. With Regen having published special study papers on the state of development of the energy storage market in Britain from market segment development to business models and regulation, head of technical development Ray Arrell presents ‘Revisiting the next wave’. The session takes a look back at the group’s 2017 report, ‘Energy storage: the next wave’, and describes how far the market has come, and how far there still is to go if the UK is to achieve net zero goals, ensure reliability of the electricity network and create economically viable use cases for batteries and other storage.

What does it take to finance a gigafactory?

The European Union has invested billions into creating a manufacturing supply chain for the energy storage market, seeing the multi-country initiative focus on key parts of the supply chain. Europe wants to make its own mark on the lithium-ion battery revolution, in both the electric vehicle (EV) and battery energy storage system (BESS) sectors. Energy-Storage.news' editor Andy Colthorpe moderates a discussion with some key players in that European push. We hear what sort of financing and business strategies have been required to support Northvolt, a startup with an ambition to serve 25% of total demand across the continent from 150GWh of battery and system gigafactories.
