Around 90 companies, including EDF, Enel and Engie, have expressed interest in financing and implementing research and development (R&D) projects relating to energy storage integration in Brazil, according the country’s energy regulator ANEEL.

Interested companies can submit project proposals before 22 December this year, with results of an initial evaluation released on 20 February 2017. Companies will then have four years to complete the projects. Other companies noted by ANEEL included Guascor Brazil, Eletrobas, Petrobas, Companhia Paulista de Forca e Luz and AES Eletropaulo.

The call for R&D projects aims to help integrate intermittent and unpredictable renewable energy into the grid while also creating a technological base and infrastructure for Brazil’s own production of storage systems. Brazil currently lacks incentives or stimuli for companies to develop storage technologies, said ANEEL. Another aim of the scheme is to bring investment to areas that currently have low attractiveness for investors, but which may bring great advantages to Brazil’s energy sector.

Both financial and manpower resources will be directed at projects of “originality, applicability, relevance and economic feasibility”.

The scheme ‘Technical and Commercial Arrangements for Inserting Energy Storage Systems in the Brazilian Electricity Sector’ was first approved in July.
