Powin Energy awarded patent for active and passive balancing battery solution

Energy storage provider Powin Energy has been awarded a patent by the United States Patent and Trademark office for its Battery Pack Operating System (bp-OS).
The bp-OS uses a unique algorithm to actively and passively balance batteries used in stationary storage systems and EV fast-charging systems down to the cell level. This enables the minimization of voltage differentials across all battery cells over the system’s lifetime.
The system, which is compatible with all leading energy storage chemistries, can also show battery health through real-time battery monitoring and state-of-charge management. It can also show data for optimizing performance and safety and for helping to extend the operational lifetime of the batteries.
The bp-OS has a battery odometer, which measures capacity degradation and calculates remaining battery lifetime. It also contains a warranty tracker, which alerts operators to problems as well as isolating problem zones, automatically filing warranty claims and avoiding full-system shutdowns.

Battery storage solutions provider Viridity Energy has been awarded a patent for systems and methods used in energy storage applications for transport including rail operations and electric vehicles.
The US Patent and Trademark Office handed out the patent for the value stacking abilities of Viridity’s software, which helps to optimize the use of energy storage systems and increase cost savings from applications such as the capture of regenerative braking power from rail systems or electric vehicles.
Viridity president Raj Chudgar said: “The intellectual property inherent in our systems relates to the parallel functions for savings and market revenue and system support for voltage management and power assist. It's a unique combination of regenerative braking capture and reuse, coupled with revenue-generating, market-based services.”
Since 2012 Viridity has operated two award-winning energy storage systems in partnership with the SouthEastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority.
The firm is in discussions with several US-based and international transport agencies, aiming to help large metropolitan transit system operators better manage the power dynamics on their third rail systems, and reduce the cost of operations.
Viridity has also recently secured other patents related to data centre operations and combined battery and solar operations.
Kreisel Electric releases home battery system

Austria-based residential storage provider Kreisel Electric has introduced its Mavero home energy storage system for both private and commercial applications.
The wall-mounted battery pack has a modular design allowing for flexibility using lithium-ion technology and is available in four sizes ranging from 8kWh to 22kWh in capacity and 70kg to 170kg in weight.
The system also allows for accelerated loading of electric vehicles.
A Kreisel release stated: “the retail price should be under €700 per kWh.”
